Joy R.S. Mathur was born to a farmer's family in New Delhi, India. He grew up close to nature with animals, trees, ponds, and rivers. This proximity to nature at its raw form enhanced his compassion towards life. Cinema was a medium that resounded with his sensitivity. He joined the theatre to explore art after his schooling. He then moved to Mumbai where he worked as an actor, an assistant director, and made a few short films as a writer-director. "Padhai Shadhai Aur Woh Bachcha" starring Parvin Dabas, Amruta Subhash, Manoj Pahwa, and Mohammed Saud, is his debut feature film as a producer, writer & director.
