Michel Houellebecq is a writer immersed in the society of spectacle, a sociologist often solicited to make sense of our times, a cryptic prophet who warns us of dark and ominous future. The portrait he paints of contemporary France isn't flattering. He lays bare the mediocrity of his fellow citizens; denouncing sexual liberalism as "absolute violence" ; decrying the ravages of an unfair market for love ; lashing out at the emptiness of a civilization built on television and supermarkets. It is the portrait of a disaster prophet, a national image who keeps mourning our lack of collective social project as well as the impossibility to love.
