Many scenes of realistic violence eg throat slitting, racketeering, punching, crushing, shooting etc often cold and casual, one instance of amputation. Often the violence is sudden and quite unexpected. Also some violence against women. Patricide and sororicide. The series depicts the late 1930s in Poland with 2nd World war looming, very bleak, poor, dirty, violent, greedy and sad. This series is shy of very few things with regards to the human natures darker sides. An absolute must see.

Proliferate consumption of alcohol in every episode, much smoking and some instances of cocaine both selling and consuming.
