Although most of the anime is fairly lighthearted and comedic, it occasionally deals with a bunch of profound and complex themes such as existentialism, existential boredom, loneliness, environmentalism and capitalism, and it also features troubled characters with emotional backstories that explore how they became the way they are.

Episode 20 of the show is a horror episode. So, it's naturally terrifying.
