Inspector John Clay investigates in Alunbury, Suffolk. Geoffrey Stewart was murdered. The prime suspects are Mark Paxton and Stewart's young wife Diana. Kitty Ryan is soon killed too. Great work for John Clay. He also investigates rigged bets at horse racing.
