Some of the stronger scenes include a closeup shot of a dental drill being forced into a man's thumb, causing his nail to shatter and briefly showing a spurt of blood; a scene where a man is pistol whipped in the face, battered and flung out of a building, causing him to suffer from strong bruises and has lots of blood on his face; and a scene where a man with severe burns on his face and has several injuries, is physically assaulted by two bar patrons who rain down punches and kicks on him, leaving him with an extremely bruised and bloodied face.

There is also a scene where a man commits suicide by shooting himself in the head where it depicts a brief spurt of blood when he pulls the trigger, as well as a brief shot of the aftermath of the victim's head, although it is covered by a blood-soaked sack.

This film is very heavy. It revolves around a woman who lost her daughter to a rapist and it is mentioned that she was burned alive. She then decides to put up Billboards that say the police aren't doing their jobs, which drives the whole town into anger, and hatred. Other dark elements are explored such as a man dying of cancer, suffering from the loss of a child, rape, domestic abuse, depression, onscreen depiction of suicide and violence.

The film has many moments that are played for dark humor, but are still intense.
