The entire purpose of the circus is to frighten people, with demon-like creatures carrying pitchforks, skulls, gothic-looking people and so on (though it's all just people in costumes). Prof. Screweyes also literally has a screw that has replaced his left eye, which he uses to put people under trances.

Professor Screweyes' fright radio is quite creepy, even to older audience members. Soul-like children apparitions pour out of the radio as they wail what scares them most.
