Based on the real life romance of Du Chengrong and Gertrude Wagner who met while he was training as a police officer in her homeland of Austria. They marry amidst racism and prejudice against their romance and subsequently move back to his homeland China, their love never wavering through half a century of difficult political and cultural changes.
