Water is life, for without water nothing in life can exist. But water can also mean death and destruction. When rivers flood their banks, then the element reveals its devastating power. Floods are more feared than almost any catastrophe. Yet life in nature waits longingly each year for this event. In spring, when the snow melts and the first rainfalls cause the water level to rise, then life returns to the river after the winter. River banks and their forests are Europe's last jungles - and of great significance not only for the flora and fauna. Alluvial forests are actually a perfect protection against the devastating floods that people fear so much.
