The school misfits are labeled "FUBARs" by their classmates. The definition is seen spelled out, but censored, one time ("f***ed up beyond all recognition").

The main characters state they have formed a "cigarette club" that collects high-end cigarettes and cigars, but that they do not smoke because it causes cancer. No cigars/cigarettes are ever shown.

A high school freshman boy whose parents are very strict and overprotective is told he can't participate in an important school event and chastised for his choice of friends and for not attending the parent-approved "rifle club" which he said he had. In the next scene he is seen carrying a family rifle, with which he walks into the backyard shed. A single shot is heard. His mother runs slow-motion toward the shed and discovers his (off-screen) body.
