The film opens with Jamie (John's ex wife) barging on John, who is apparently pleasuring himself. Loud rap music with suggestive lyrics is heard, and a glimpse of his bare buttocks is very briefly visible, with him wearing headphones and watching porn on a laptop (not seen). He immediately puts his pants on, and he tells his wife that he has "jock itch."

It is implied that Molly has sex with John almost immediately after meeting him. The audience sees the end of an encounter, with heads and shoulders visible, heavy breathing and the woman apparently on top.

Molly and John begin making out, preparing to have sex, but her older son, Cyrus, then turns on the light and interrupts them. John's shirt is partially unbuttoned and Molly is in lingerie.

Some verbal tussling, often with foul language involved. Cyrus and John fight at a wedding, punching and kicking each other repeatedly. They are seen with bruises.

Some strong language (mostly f**k), concentrated in key scenes. The f-word is said about two dozen times (twice in a sexual context), and s**t is said about half a dozen times. Anatomical terms are used a combined total of about five times, and there are about half a dozen religious profanities.

One of the film's first scenes shows John getting drunk at a party. He drinks beer, but is then given a "Red Bull and Vodka" by his ex-wife's new fiancee, which gets him smashed. He later urinates outside on a plant and proceeds to sing karoke. John, Cyrus and Molly drink wine for dinner at least twice. A distressed Cyrus chugs various drinks at a wedding, such as champagne and a cocktail likely containing harder beverages like vodka and gin.

The oedipal complex present in the title character may be disturbing for some.
